There will be a limited edition of 25 boxes available with the digital release made up of : a hand painted seashell with a lock or key by Christina Rauh Fishburne, a miniature shell with a response poem by my brother Chris Rauh and a short hand radio signal rolled up inside of it, and a sea stone. The shells, stones, and radio signals all represent themes taken from Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s poems and journals - while the music I composed represents an interpretation of her writing. The handwritten response poems continue the experiential theme by reacting to the music. Each glass-windowed box comes with a sealed bag of sand taken from near the site Charles and Anne Lindbergh took off from in Long Island for their survey flights in the 30s, and no two boxes have the same combination of elements.

Angels Of Annunciation tells the story—or, to be more precise, one possible story—of Anne Morrow Lindbergh (1906-2001). Despite witnessing almost the twentieth century’s full course, her wings spanned a landscape far greater than any defined by the hyphen between her years.

Rauh sees the creation of this project as distinct from his previous work composing literature-inspired music (drawing onthe Brontë sisters and others) insofar as it takes on a more “experiential” structure. In that sense, what you will hear on Angels Of Annunciation is not program music. Says Rauh: “Ifeel like the project is more of a musical translation of the writing than me responding to the writing.” This is especially true of The Voices That Can Make Us Hear, a flowering vision of clarity in the face of unresolved dangers. Its graceful charge, slow-burning and brief, flirts with our consciousness like the coattails of a dream. The poem behind it, “No Angels,” is a paean to the grandeur of the intimate. The Plum For Couragecomes from the travelogue North to the Orient and finds both author and musical interpreter rendering choice moments into melodic phrases. Angels Of Annunciation glimpses a heavenly light. Its source text, the above-mentioned Gift from the Sea, turns those angels into guardians of learning. Now There Are No More Words is the most forlorn yet also most hopeful piece on the album and is based on an astonishing poem called “A Leaf, A Flower, and A Stone,” in which Anne replaces the mouth, heart, and hand with a leaf, a flower, and a stone. Such symbolism breathes in Rauh’s complementary song.
